PIACT/CTYIP Legislative Reception
The 2025 PIACT/CTYIP Legislative Reception was held on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, Conn. This year's event provided an invaluable opportunity for insurance producers from across the state to connect with lawmakers, discuss pressing industry challenges, and advocate for meaningful change.
The reception was well-attended with nearly 50 attendees, allowing producers and lawmakers to come together in a relaxed setting with appetizers and drinks provided by Doro Catering. The casual atmosphere encouraged open dialogue about the key issues facing both industry professionals and the insurance consumers and businesses they serve. The state of the insurance marketplace, including challenges in affordability and availability across both commercial and personal lines were among the many topics discussed during the evening. This year's reception offered an oppoprtunity for producers to highlight PIACT's 2025 legislative priorities, which include surplus-lines reform, regulating third-party litigation funding, and establishing insurance requirements for e-bikes and e-scooters.
The event’s timing couldn’t have been better—it was held the same week that PIACT’s top legislative priority (H.B.6981), a bill that would modernize the excess-and-surplus insurance placement process was reported out of committee. The vote came after several PIACT association members provided testimony in support of H.B.6981. This legislative momentum set the perfect stage for a night of engaging conversations about the future of the industry, which followed testimony given by several association members before the Connecticut General Assembly's Insurance and Real Estate Committee.
The event also stressed the importance of stronger advocacy efforts to help ensure that lawmakers understand the real-world impact of insurance legislation.
Surplus-lines reform
Attendees left the event energized and ready to continue the conversation—both in their communities and at the Capitol. This work is just beginning—get involved! While the reception was a success, the fight for modernizing the E&S placement process isn’t over. PIACT has launched an advocacy campaign, and we need your help! To get involved: Send a letter to your state legislators letting them know you support H.B.6981. Another great way to get involved is to participate in PIACT's District Office Visit program.
